Fabrications: Constructing Female Identity
Curated by Yulia Tikhonova

NYC based artists Anya Liftig and Katya Grokhovsky collaborate on a performance examining the construction of female identity through gesture, sound, movement and language. Mimicking and imitating techniques instilled by popular culture, societal and family guidance during different periods of time, the artists investigate and highlight female conditioning, which appears to be disturbingly constant throughout generations.

Anya Liftig’s work has been featured at TATE Modern, Highways Performance Space, Exit Art, [performance space] London, Performmer Stammtisch Berlin and Chashama. She is a graduate of Yale University and Georgia State University and has received grant and residency support from the MacDowell Colony, The Field, Vermont Studio Center, University of Antioquia, Casa Tres Patios Medellin, Colombia, and Flux Projects, Atlanta. Her work, “The Anxiety of Influence” was an intervention into Marina Abramovic’s “The Artist is Present” retrospective at MOMA.

Katya Grokhovsky is a multidisciplinary artist. She has an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from Victorian College of the Arts, Australia. Grokhovsky is a recipient of numerous awards including Dame Joan Sutherland Fund, Australia Council for the Arts, NYFA Mentoring Program for Immigrant Artists, Chashama space to create grant and more. She has received support from Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, NARS (New York Residency and Studio Foundation), Santa Fe Art Institute, Watermill Center and others. She has exhibited and performed extensively.
