Lori Loves Lobsters

I’m an accidental lobster collector- once when I was 15 I bought a vintage lobster pin (truthfully, it was likely a remnant of a Red Lobster uniform).  Thus, a lifetime of people gifting me lobster things began, and after years and years of it, I actually DO love lobsters and find myself being attracted to lobster-centric things, including art. Being a long time vegetarian, I wasn’t all about lobster because of its considered delicacy, but instead I dig on the crustacean from a purely design aesthetic.(My head would probably explode if I ever went to Maine).

That said, it seems artists have also shared my love for the sea creature. Dali equated lobsters with sex, creating the famous Lobster Telephone for Surrealist patron Edward James’ estate in England. The lobster’s genitalia was placed next to the working telephone receiver, putting it in direct contact with the user, and also nabbing it the name Aphrodisiac Telephone. (I loved it so much that I not only had it tattooed to my body, but also made a Lobster Telephone costume for Halloween). The phone also comes in white, and was also inspiration for a dress by Elsa Schiaparelli. Dali painted a lobster on a white silk dress for the designer, which was worn by Wallis Simpson and immortalized in photographs by Cecil Beaton.

Pablo Picasso even took a stab at lobsterisms, painting a hardly recognizable Lobster and Cat, which is in the permanent collection of the Guggenheim. Jeff Koons of course joined ship with his inflatable lobster sculpture, which I wish he’d extend into his balloon animal series, you know, because I’m into that sort of thing.
