‘Broad City’ Illustrator Mike Perry inaugurates Garis & Hahn new DTLA space

If you’ve seen Broad City, you’ve no doubt been mesmerized by Mike Perry‘s colorful animation that can turn a pimple into a rainbow gusher or a bunch of alphabet letters in to puking … well, puking alphabet letters, actually.

Broad City may be based in NYC, but Perry’s riotous illustrations lend a California state of mind to the visual identity of the show.  It makes some good sense then, that Garis & Hahn’s DTLA Art’s District debut showcases Mike Perry’s latest work. Intoxicating Pollen Wiggling in a Moist Journey of Constantly Blooming Tides will feature twelve works: large scale paintings on canvas and a collection of mobile sculptures titled “Inner Thoughts”.

Vibrant human form abstractions, un-natural colors, distorted composition give the work an edge and sometimes a bit of a sense of humor.

Mike Perry “Nice Ass” (2016) 16.5 x 24.5 inches. House paint, acrylic and gouache on canvas.

For Garis & Hahn, this cross country move from NYC’s Lower East Side to DTLA is right on time as the Arts District continues to explode with galleries and event spaces.

Gallery co-founder Mary Garis is looking forward to their new digs.  “LA, which has a legacy of very talented artists and strong institutions, is increasingly getting its due credit as a true center to rival other major art cities like New York,” she said in the statement. “We feel the timing is right to be active contributors to the LA art scene.”

Intoxicating Pollen Wiggling in a Moist Journey of Constantly Blooming Tides opens September 9th at Garis & Hahn’s new Downtown LA location at 1820 Industrial Street, Los Angeles CA 90021
