Bridget Beck’s “A Glendale Picnic”

We Art Nerds first fell in love with Bridget Beck’s work at the “Draft Punk” show at Autonomie Projects last fall.  Her artist bio states, “I am interested in the inherent beauty of a junky world.  I embrace used and labored bits and pieces that have a value that is overlooked.”  Naturally this manifesto is a perfect fit for LA based ART from the ashes/AFTA Productions‘ YOU ARE HERE temporary public art series in cooperation with the City of Glendale Arts & Culture Commission. With a focus on reclaimed materials and community programming, AFTA Productions found a kindred spirit in Bridget Beck.

Bridget’s sculpture, the first in the YOU ARE HERE series, is a 19-foot in diameter interactive steel sculpture with picnic seating and birdhouses.  The piece will celebrate its public opening on March 21, 2015, on the grounds of its temporary home in Glendale Central Park, with a ribbon cutting and live music from the Honolulu Avenue Strummers and Montrose Ukulele Jam.

“The sculpture isn’t complete until people are actually sitting on it,” says Bridget Beck, “I consider the community to be one of the materials in constant flux in my work.  It changes character with the conversations that inhabit all the spaces in between. I’ve hidden secret narratives everywhere. A Glendale Picnic is not only full of actual verbal conversation, it also has a physical record of all of the days I’ve spent working on it.  I have created a personal physical language in all welds and the little bits and pieces.”
