Two Pavilions Coming to Governors Island This Summer for FIGMENTS City of Dreams

I was SO honored to be part of the jury for the 2015 FIGMENT City of Dreams Pavilion for Governors Island this summer. After a few weeks of deliberating, I was excited that my favorite entry was one of the TWO pavilions that were chosen as winners! Permitting funding, BOTH will be constructed for visitors to enjoy this summer (which seems a zillion years away, I know).

Billion Oyster Pavilion by BanG Studio knocked my socks off for its design and sustainability. Entrants are required to use recycled or recyclable materials, and the BanG team created a pavilion that can be disassembled and directly used by the Harbor School students on Governors Island, who already have an oyster colony that helps to cleans the waters of New York Harbor. Organic Growth by Izaskun Chinchilla Architects is awesome too- with a canopy of umbrellas that looks like it’ll be super fun to lounge under. Can’t wait to see these come to fruition!

FIGMENT, a free, family-friendly participatory arts event held in multiple cities and attracting tens of thousands of participants each year, is excited to announce that for the first time, two winners instead of just one have been selected in the fifth annual City of Dreams Pavilion Design Competition, co-run with the Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY). Billion Oyster Pavilion by BanG Studio of New York City and Organic Growth by Izaskun Chinchilla Architects of Madrid and London will both be assembled on Governors Island and open to the public for the summer 2015 season, pending approvals and fundraising.

The annual competition creates an architectural pavilion on Governors Island open to the public for the summer season. It emphasizes reuse of materials and environmentally friendly design. Please see the attached PDF for extensive information on the competition.
