This Year’s SELECT Art Fair brings live music to the art experience

The next wave of New York art fair weeks is about to burst forth May 13th with what has been dubbed as “Frieze Week.” There obviously will be a bevy of exciting artworks and happenings (that we’ll either be mentioning or attending!), but what I found to be awesomely refreshing is SELECT Fair’s new music program, coupling the obvious visual art with live music acts (including Lee Renaldo from Sonic Youth). The music will be fused with rooftop installations – by Andriy Bazyuta and TROUBLE (Sam Hillmer and Laura Paris). Side bar- I can’t help but think of my favorite part in Matthew Barney’s Cremaster Cycle where Murphy’s Law and Agnostic Front are playing on sculptural salt stages made by Barney at the Guggenheim. But I digress…

BTW the exhibitors were just announce as well.

Today SELECT Art Fair releases its initial 2015 programming schedule, which includes an exciting roster of musical talent, performances, Installations, book signings, and lectures. From May 13 – 17, SELECT will return to Frieze Week and will present its diverse platform at the historic Center 548, formerly the DIA Centre.

SELECT will feature for the very first time a selection of critically acclaimed musical acts including Lee Renaldo from Sonic Youth and collaborator Leah Singer, Mivos String Quartet, Hiro Kone, Sick Feeling and Narc. Each act will perform adjacent to immersive rooftop installations by Andriy Bazyuta – presented by Whitebox Art Center – and TROUBLE, artist duo Sam Hillmer and Laura Paris.

SELECT’s advisory panel will help present adjunct programming which includes lectures, book signings and performance art throughout the fair. The advisory panel is made up of reputable arts organizations, such as Franklin Furnace, Rhombus Space, BRIC, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, OR Gallery, Whitebox Art Center, and Transmitter.

Center 548 is divided into three floors and a roof deck with stunning 360-degree views ofManhattan and the Hudson River. Each floor is 9,000 square feet of virtually column-free space and 14-foot high ceilings. Highlights of the fair include a video program by Skowhegan and the return of Culturefix, a popular LES Art Bar that will resurrect itself on the rooftop and will feature an array of specialty cocktails, beers and wines.

Limited gallery space is still available. Additional performances, musical elements and galleries will be revealed soon.
