STAR WARS: in Costume
While nerds are amping up for this Friday’s premier of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, you can get into the mood at Discovery Times Square. I went last Friday to check out the sprawling exhibition “Star Wars: The Force of the Costume,” and left totally inspired. Seventy original costumes (heavy on the Queen Amidala, and Leia’s slave girl bikini!) are on display along with something even better to an art history nerd like me- their historical and cultural inspirations. Each meticulous costume is paired with backstories of influence- from traditional China to Hitler to Medieval days, each sites not only reference, but reason. It’s a great and fun show with something more for those of us who “like” Star Wars…but are not obsessed.
