Soho Art Walk
SoHo holds a special place in our hearts because many artnerds will tell you it used to be the center of the art world in the 1970s, 80s and 90s before Chelsea took over. The Dia Foundation has done a great public service preserving several major works by Walter De Maria including Lori’s favorite: The Earth Room and Broken Kilometer.
The Historic SoHo Gallery scene start at 420 West Broadway. The epicenter of the art world in SoHo for many years housing the galleries of Leo Castelli and other leading art dealers. Formerly a deserted neighborhood of factories, these pioneers turned the industrial wasteland into a cultural destination. It was here at Sonnabend Gallery in 1969 that Vito Acconci famously masturbated under a ramped floor of the gallery for his exhibition called (the very literal) “Seedbed.”
Learn more about the “SeedBed.”, the original White Columns – 112 Workshop, and Gordon Matta Clarke’s Food Cafe walking through this amazing art historic new york neighborhood.
