Singapore Fashion Inspiration: Ong Shunmugam

Last week we had the pleasure of previewing eight Singapore designers at the Jade Hotel in a casual night of sipping Singapore Slings and chatting with designers and models wearing their latest lines. Since that night, I can’t get the work of Ong Shunmugam out of my head. Her pieces reflect┬áthe multi-cultural influences that are coupled with Singapore’s storied past of struggling with identity after British and Japanese occupation. The structured pieces literally unify clashing textiles borrowed from other cultures, into beautiful, crisp and complete garments that brought the gorgeous textures and patterns of Gustav Klimt’s paintings to mind. Even better, the textiles are sourced from artisans themselves- no matter how hard they are to find- making the little label both ethical and inspiring.
