Saints of the Lower East Side
FabNYC and Art Up are sprucing up the Lower East Side. (you may remember their Jon Burgerman art walk on Extra Place). Over the last ten or so years, the neighborhood as rapidly changed from the gritty, artistic spirit into a home for NYU dorms, SuperCuts, and bars with $15 cocktails. To commemorate the original creatives of the East Village and LES, artist Tom Sandford has painted seven painted portraits of historic Lower East Side heros, aptly mounted on scaffolding, the ultimate symbol of change.
Painted with the similar gilded glow of Byzantine mosaics, Martin Wong, Joey Ramone, Miguel Pinero, Ellen Stewart, Charlie Parker, Arthur Fellig and Allen Ginsberg, Sandford likens these East side staples to saints, in their creative spirit that once made the Lower East Side an avant-garde center.
