Redefining the odalisque with Awol Erizk at FLAG Art Foundation

The odalisque (reclining nude) and the male gaze has been a hot topic of art history since the 19th Century, constantly being re-examined, challenged and dare I say rebranded. Artist Awol Erizk’s new exhibition, New Flower | Images of the Reclining Venus, at the FLAG Art Foundation challenges the traditional odalisque with a series of stunning portraits taken in Addis Abba, Ethiopia. The artist chats with Quarles and FLAG’s founder Glenn Fuhrman this Thursday, November 13 at 7pm, doors at 6.
