Pen and Brush

Since 1894, Pen & Brush has been an international organization supporting women in the arts- visual, performance and literary. Founded by Mary and Janet Lewis, the club took residence in an elegant townhouse on East 10th near 5th avenue from 1923 until it was sold recently, in 2010. The beautiful brownstone was home to inexpensive studios, galleries and sitting rooms- as well as 11 fireplaces- for women of the arts to enjoy.

Sold for $11.2 million (below the asking price), the townhouse served as a deep history for the non-profit. They tried to market the building to Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, but instead sold to a developer who will install a pool inside the house and convert it to a single family mansion.

But never fear, they aren’t out of business, has moved to a smaller, less expensive location in Chelsea- without all the fireplaces and deep rooted history.
