Nyugen Smith and Through the Looking Glass at Gateway Project

Art Nerd fave Nyugen Smith will be performing this Thursday at our friends across the Hudson, The Gateway Project, in Newark. We brought Nyugen down to SCOPE Miami last year, his work and performances are powerful, and frankly, beautiful. Along with his performance, the space is holding an artists reception for Through the Looking Glass at 2 Gateway Center.

“We Dig Deep, To Anthropologically Speak”

Project For Empty Space, NYC, and Solo(s) Project House, NJ, are pleased to announce the opening of Through the Looking Glass at The Gateway II Gallery, in Pennsylvania Station, Newark, NJ.

Through the looking glass is an exhibition inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass, And What Alice Found There (1871), which follows Carroll’s most famous character, Alice, as she continues her adventures through a perverse version of Wonderland. The exhibition explores ideas of parallel identity; in this context it can be seen either as a conceptual reflection of sett or as a projected fantasy about identity. Works in the exhibition will explore both of these interpretations, and others that may be derived from the multidimensional aspects of ‘parallel’.

Through the looking glass is the sister experience to the current Gateway Project public exhibition, Windup Wonderland, which explores ideas of fantasy and innovation. In their exploration of parallelisms, several works will correlate with themes and individual works in the existing exhibition. The purpose of the show and larger program is to garner both a deeper understanding of identity and an expanded cognizance of potential as a byproduct of self-exploration and imagination.

Through the Looking Glass artists include: Aileen Bassis, Bunny M, Marcy Chevali, Ruby Chishti, Lisa Conrad, Pam Cooper, LNY + NDA + Mata Ruda, Kevin Darmanie, Alexandra Desipris + Derek Rush, Naomi Frank, Chitra Ganesh, Richard Hart, Julie Heffernan, Aimee Hertog, Ryan Higgins, Jamie Kates, Sarita Khurana, Robert Lach, Leila Lal, Brendan Mahoney, Tehniyet Masood, L’OR, David Oquendo, Sa’dia Rehman, Khari Ricks, Esther Simmonds-MacAdams, Laura Quattrocchi, Nyugen Smith, Mary Anne Strandell, Kate Tiernan, Kelly Vetter, Virginia Wagner, Jennifer Watson and Saya Woolfalk.

About the Gateway Project
The Gateway Project is a series of pop up art exhibitions that are activated intermittently throughout The Gateway Center; a multi-functional building that connects to Newark’s Pennsylvania Station. Currently exhibitions are activated in a full functioning gallery space, The Gateway Project Gallery, in Gateway II, and throughout the entirety of the Gateway Concourse, which goes from the Station to Mulberry Street. The Gateway Projects is a collaborative endeavor by Solo(s) Project House (Newark, New Jersey) and Project For Empty Space (New York City). The purpose of The Gateway Projects is to enliven community spaces through interactive and stimulating art exhibitions. The gallery space rotates exhibitions every three months, providing participation opportunities to national and international curators and artists. By introducing new partnerships with each exhibition, there is a constant dialogue about Newark’s continuously developing art community.

Gallery exhibitions are open to the public, Tuesday –Thursday from 11 am – 7 pm.

The concourse exhibition is available to view by a daily commuting audience of 30,000.The Gateway Projects are made possible by C & K Properties and the Gateway Concourse Association.
