Mudd Club
Everyone who became someone hung out at Tribeca’s Mudd Club from 1978 until 1983. The loft itself was owned by Ross Bleckner, the fourth floor was a gallery curated by Keith Haring, and it epitomized the polar opposite of the glitz and glamor of Studio 54. Of course with the influx of downtown celebs like Basquiat, Madonna (when they were dating), Debbie Harry, Klaus Nomi, David Byrne, Ginsberg, Burroughs and of course Andy Warhol, the club morphed into an elitist spot with a strict door policy.
Basquiat’s band Gray played there, as well as other No Wave bands. But, like any good club full of artists, the cool factor could only stick around for so long. Some say at the time of its closing in 1983- “At the end, it was not much fun anymore. I mean, it had just become–kind of like the hangers-on to the hangers-on at the Mudd Club.”
Now it is a “triple-mint condominium building.”
