Leo Castelli Gallery
The late Leo Castelli opened his first gallery here on February 10th, 1957. A year later, Jasper Johns had his first show here, which launched the gallery’s role as the catalyst for Pop, Minimal and Conceptual Art. Everybody who is anybody showed here- Rauschenberg, Twombly, Stella, Lichtenstein, Warhol, Rosenquist, Judd, Flavin, Nauman and countless other careers were launched here.
Castelli set the bar for gallerists everywhere, discovering trends and fostering careers. His first wife, Ileana Sonnabend, went on to open the seminal Sonnabend gallery.
After moving to Soho in the 70s, the gallery moved back to the Upper East Side after his death in 1999, just a few buildings from the original location, now at 18 East 77th. The gallery is still run by Castelli’s wife, Barbara Bertozzi Castelli.
