Jeff Koons Balloon Flower (Red)

In the shadow of the new One World Trade Center is an oversized Jeff Koons Balloon Animal. I stumbled upon this fountain one hot day when wandering the Battery Park waterfront, looking for any sort of breeze. When I came upon the Koons fountain, I made like a hobo and promptly put my feet right under the shooting water.

Balloon Flower (Red) is one of Koons’ signature highly polished, public stainless steel sculptures. Red, shiny, and shooting water in summer, it’s the perfect place to take a breather if you’ve navigated the tourist heavy South Street Seaport.

The reflective piece is actually an homage to 9/11 survivors, but it takes on a more upbeat nature with its shiny reflectiveness.
