TODAY! Jean Paul Gaultier comes to the Brooklyn Museum

When New Yorkers think of fashion and art, the default exhibit is the Met’s annual Costume Institute Gala exhibit. However, this year, the fashion and art exhibit that I’m looking forward to the most is “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” that will be coming to the Brooklyn Museum on October 25, in its only East Coast installation during its international tour. I may be slightly biased since I saw the exhibit a year ago at the de Young museum in San Francisco, but I can confidently say that it is one of the coolest exhibits I’ve ever seen.

It follows the journey of JPG, from his beginnings in the 70s as a young designer, to his forays into cinema and haute couture. Gaultier has been called the enfant terrible of the fashion world and his avant garde creations – from his ubiquitous sailor designs to ┬áhis infamous cone bra for Madonna’s “Blonde Ambition” tour – show his ability to push the boundaries of not just design, but gender, social convention, and creativity. The exhibit itself reflects Gaultier’s versatility, using a variety of mediums, from multimedia to sketches.
