Doug Aikten’s MIRROR at SAM

Finally some artnerd-worthy news from the Pacific Northwest! The Seattle Art Museum [featuring an embarrassingly clunky website] has an amazing event coming up on Sunday featuring one of my favorite artists: DOUG AITKEN!

On Sunday March 24th 2013 SAM will unveil Doug Aitken’s MIRROR, a permanent art installation on the exterior facade of the Museum. MIRROR is an environmentally attune urban art installation that changes in real time in response to the motion and atmosphere.  Programmed by Aitken and his leet team of quasi- responsive design developers, filmmakers & artist assistants it should be an impressive addition to the Seattle downtown landscape.  It may feature some classic earthworks, but this artnerd hopes they will stop calling it an “urban earthwork” and let its #artstech brilliance shine.

SAM’s Event Page says:

At the unveiling, guests will experience an unprecedented performance with synchronized choreography of MIRROR in relation to compositions by minimalist composers Steve Reich and Terry Riley. Mr. Riley will be in Seattle for the performance of his monumental work In C, featuring musicians from the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and Stuart Dempster, faculty at the University of Washington School of Music, who performed with Riley for the original debut of In C in 1964.

The unveiling will occur on the corner of First Avenue and Union Street. Neighborhood businesses, restaurants, cafes, and food trucks are joining in the celebration! There will be food trucks along First Avenue with many neighboring businesses offering special deals. SAM galleries will be free to the public all day, 10 am – 9 pm, but tickets are required and may be picked up at SAM’s Ticketing Desk.

This is an outdoor event and will take place rain or shine.

  1. […] he’ll allow it)!  Obvi… he’s been an art nerd obsession of mine for years, from Sleepwalkers at MoMA (2006-7) to Station to Station (2013).  Basically, Aitken is a visionary genius in his own right […]
