Art Nerd NY at AAF Seattle

Seattle is an interesting place contemporary art-wise, iconic antlers and birds are common motifs.  Occasionally, we get some intriguing shows of abstract paintings relating to science (cosmology, physics and geology) and pop surrealism.  This weekend the Affordable Art Fair came to Seattle and brought us a a plethora of contemporary art from abroad and outside the pacific northwest (yay!)  As a self proclaimed art-fair warrior, I have a soft spot in my heart for AAF. I bought my first major artwork, a George Condo silkscreen from John Szoke Editions in 2006 at AAF NYC.

Overall, the AAF is a great hunting ground for newbie collectors looking to get some great art for their buck.  AAF Seattle set the stage by placing a show-opening, prestigious UK Editions Gallery full of Damien Hirst Dots and Anish Kapoor prints as the first booth you see when you walk in.  Art Nerd Tip*: collecting prints/editions of blue chip artists is a smart strategy, can see ROI on the FMV of the art in less than 5 years.

The rest of the fair had its share of highlights, some of my favs included the bright and energetic Axiom Gallery from Santa Monica and the sophisticated Villa del Arte Galleries from Barcelona.

Special mentions: Chaucer Silverson for being super nice art people from Bozeman, MT; Michelle y Williams of Houston for being one those rare artist/dealer hybrids; and Friesen Abmeyer of Seattle for those cool spray paint can sculptures.  Random thought- what is the deal with the Portland Galleries? Visiting them in Portland is a great art experience but their booths were collectively underwhelming at AAF Seattle.  I’ve seen a few of them exhibit at Volta, Miami fairs, etc and it doesn’t make sense.

I will be posting the rest of my art fair pictures shortly on my own blog: laurenalbrecht.com

*Universal art collecting tip:  buy art you love.
