Castor Gallery is pleased to announce A horrendous assembly, clawing and jerking, all mashed tightly into specks that rest upon the seeing orb, eventually layering as a pearl does into kingdoms of permanent escape (The Seeing Orb), an exhibition of new collaborative and solo works by Brooklyn-based artists Matt Jones and Eric Wiley. The show opens on Thursday, May 7th at 7:00 pm with a reception until 9:00 pm, the run until May 31st.

“All of the effects, in which we don’t deny the reality of, are caused by the imagination.” — Benjamin Franklin.

Jones and Wiley have worked together for five years. In the beginning, Wiley was Jones’ intern. As their friendship grew, the duo found similarities in their artistic practices. Eventually, Wiley grew out of interning for Jones, and became a talented painter in his own right. Color and brushstroke play an important role in Wiley’s works, each new painting session causes Wiley to critically examine his progress from the sessions before, either arguing with what he has created or reaffirming each of the works’ elements. Through his process Wiley creates worlds familiar to the viewer, and populates them with creatures that resemble versions of one’s self that manifest in daydreams and nightmares.

Jones emphasizes the similarities between Caspar David Friedrich’s romantic landscapes and the intense beauty and gravity of first person shooter video game space in his oeuvreJones is trying to reconcile these two experiences into the plane of a painting’s surface. By close observation of video game realms translated into paint, Jones achieves a new hybrid experience – one of contemplation and immersion into overwhelming attraction.

The Seeing Orb is the culmination of months of Jones’ and Wiley’s painting separately in their studios, a relentless dialogue via email and instant messenger, as well as countless hours of painting, drawing, and building artworks together. They have spent a lot of time unlearning things they had previously decided were fact so they can find new and exciting variants on inconsistent truths. They are currently putting together a catalog of their exploits.
