Art Nerd New York | Los Angeles

We’re back from #FriezeNY. Blown away by the #SugarSphinx

Hey LA! We’re back from a whirlwind week in New York checking out a bunch of art fairs including Frieze, NADA, Pulse, Cutlog, etc. Plus we saw Creative Time’s epic presentation of Kara Walker’s massive Sugar Sphinx housed in the Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Kara Walker, an artstar darling, is primarily known for her provactive black paper cutouts/silhouettes of the antebellum era of American Slavery. Walker’s vignettes frequently explore racism in America, identity politics, gender roles and identity. This is her first monumental public art project sponsored by Creative Time and its brilliantly executed. Between the massive scale, sugar everywhere, history of the venue, and the precise features of the Sphinx – we were blown away.
