The Plastic Religion
It’s fitting that the final show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery of 2016, over the course of the month of December – a time of religious celebration and gathering, should be this one. Pool and Marianela’s show consists of models of Barbie and Ken transformed into familiar religious icons – from Buddha to Krishna to Jesus himself. Their work has provoked widespread controversy in several languages and countries – a true sign of a job well done. In the past year the artists have shown in the Palais du Louvre, Paris and were received in the Vatican by Pope Francisco who accepted a gift of their Barbie, “Our Lady of Lujan”. This is their first show in the USA.
Alongside the series of plastic Barbie & Ken converts, Pool and Marianela will be showing two new paintings showing Barbie and Ken as gold leafed Byzantine icons – “Our Lady of Mattel” and “Sacred Heart of Mattel”. We will also see 12 Via Crucis altarpieces, an 8 piece nativity scene (’tis the season!) 12 small gold leaf paintings, and a Barbie Porsche 911 with Ken as Krishna, Buddah and Jesus.
The show opens tonight, December 2 2017 – what a great way to kick off the festive season!
