“LIFE += ART” – LIMA’S WORK INTEGRATES ORIGINAL MUSIC AND LIGHT COMPOSITIONS WITH DAILY LIFE, AND IS PRESENTED BY THE CITY OF WEST HOLLYWOOD THROUGH “ART ON THE OUTSIDE”

For a week now, Brazilian-born artist and Cal Arts Doctor of Musical Arts Manuel Lima has been living daily life and performing his fluxus-inspired piece “The Cube” in a 10’ square cube installation in West Hollywood, only leaving for meals and rest breaks. He sleeps amid the urban soundscape of the Sunset Strip at 8775 Sunset, 90069 (the old Tower Records overflow lot).

From 9A-5PM, Manuel plays piano, riffing off the radio dial; from 5-7PM, he has tea with the public outside the cube; and from 8P to about 9:30P, he plays the original composition “Red Light Piano,” accompanied by pulsing lights and subwoofer vibrations. Occasionally, Amazon delivers essentials to him, directly to “The Cube.” Local restaurants have been hosting him for dinner. Overall, Manuel’s aim is to take his practice out of the concert hall, and integrate daily life with artistic creation, and to be open to interactions with passers-by and visitors.

Manuel will be at The Cube – presented by the City of West Hollywood through its WeHo Arts’ “Art on the Outside” public art program – through Sunday, August 21. The schedule, details and more are available here: http://bit.do/TheCube – and here’s some more information on what’s transpired so far:

A Sao Paulo native whose graduate studies in the United States were fully funded by the Brazilian government, Lima just earned his Performer-Composer DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, CA. Lima was studying classical piano when existential questioning caused him to interrupt that practice, experiment, and take his process out of a formal space. He did a 10-day trial for “The Cube” in the Val Verde hills in Valencia this spring, and he sees the project as a meditation of sorts. With the West Hollywood iteration, including the vagaries and variations of urban life, he is underdoing a profoundly personal and creative transformation in a very public space.

Lima’s hand-written, hand-drawn “score” for “The Cube” offers a broad stroke schedule for a process that allows for the unpredictable unfolding of each successive day. Lima says, “I want to reach a point where work, life, and art are all the same. I want to be present. I want to be away from my phone and social media and have my heart on one thing at a time” (view the score: http://weho.org/home/showdocument?id=27099).

In concluding the score, Lima writes, “’The Sunset Cube’ performance ends on the evening of the tenth day. At 8PM I will perform the “Red Light Piano” one more time and step outside the cube for a drink.”
