Projection Mapping at Art Basel Miami Beach

I think the antidote for all the art you’re taking in during Art Basel may be oversized illuminated moving art. In which case you’d be best to head downtown Miami for “Form and Substance” where a curated exhibition of artists are displaying animated works both in and on the Hotel Intercontinental: the interior exhibition features projections, video and light installations while the exterior of the building is adorned in animated moving pictures at a scale of 360 feet high (that’s 34 stories) & visible from all over downtown Miami & from across the bay in Miami Beach.
The premiere of Form and Substance was held in Brooklyn NY in 2013 and having grown since now successfully showcases “one of the most exciting new techniques in contemporary art”.
I spoke with Niall Thompson from Dandelion + Burdock about their projection included in the collection. The piece is a collection of iconic Miamian elements: bright colors, swirling aquatic textures and sealife that almost saunters up the 34 story scale canvas. The slow majestic forms are presented as a reflection of the thriving often overlooked life in the water below the waterside structure, and in true Miami style have enough jazz to them to hold their own against the iconic Art Deco and neon of South Beach.
From the artists statement: “the projection is a stark reflection on the contrast between the built enviornment and the natural world, co-existing in this unique place, and made even more powerful by Udit Duseja’s eerie score.”
The piece is the most recent in their 10 year long CV installing large scale projections internationally. Check it out until the end of the week.
