NEXT TO THE ARTIST’S “MODERN HEROES” IN WEST HOLLYWOOD PARK

THE CITY OF WEST HOLLYWOOD WILL HOST A RECEPTION AT THE SITE ON SEPTEMBER 10, 5:30PM

West Hollywood, CA: “Michelangelo 2020: A Tribute to Women,” a sculpture by internationally renowned Italian artist Mauro Perucchetti, will be installed in West Hollywood Park on September 8, 2015. The piece will be positioned next to Perucchetti’s “Modern Heroes,” which arrived at the site in late May to kick off Pride month festivities. Both monumental works—each one a white fiberglass replica of the artist’s original 2011 marble sculptures—are presented by the City of West Hollywood and its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission as part of Art on the Outside, the City’s ongoing public art program that installs temporary artworks on West Hollywood’s median and parks.

With “Michelangelo 2020: A Tribute to Women,” (white fiberglass, 6.5 x 2.5 x 1.5 feet), Perucchetti reimagines Michelangelo’s classic David sculpture in female form. As Los Angeles art critic Peter Frank has noted, “Perucchetti heroicizes woman by having her usurp man’s pedestal…The Tribute to Women assumes the original’s dynamic poise, conflating the subject of heroic action with the object of desire.” The piece was previously exhibited near Le Louvre, in Paris, France, in 2012.

“Modern Heroes,” (white fiberglass, 6 x 6 x 2.5 feet), features pop art emulations of comic book-like icons of masculinity (based on the artist’s own visage). They are positioned in a gesture referential to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling. It is an iconic example of Perucchetti’s commentary on the modern Western World, in this case a reflection of his belief in marriage equality. The artwork was previously exhibited in front of Le Louvre in Paris, France in 2013.

The City of West Hollywood will host a reception for the artist Perucchetti and his pair of Michelangelo-inspired works at 5:30PM on Thursday, September 10. It takes place at the installation site, just north of the West Hollywood Library at 647 N. San Vicente Blvd., West Hollywood, CA, 90069—just across the street from MOCA Pacific Design Center.

The City’s event precedes De Re Gallery’s 7-10PM opening for the Perucchetti show Pop Fiction, which runs through October 10 (8920 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, CA, 90069). De Re will exhibit a series of powerful pieces intended to inspire society to consider global issues through a mix of social critique and pop aesthetics. Mixing conceptualism, minimalism, and pop art, the two- and three-dimensional Perucchetti works to be displayed—including “Don’t Mess with Us,” “Monument to the Dollar,” and “Power of Love”—incorporate diverse mediums including pigmented resin, Swarovski crystals, marble, and stainless steel.
