LAST CHANCE TO HIT SAGMEISTERS “THE HAPPY SHOW”

SAGMEISTER ENTRY

‘THE HAPPY SHOW’ ENTRY

I love Sagmeister enormously.

On entering the  MOCA space at the Pacific Design Center you are greeted by a racy infographic (read: line art of people doing it) which you will totally adore and immediately adorn your face with a giant smile (uh, if you’re cool like that). A few steps in and you may be instructed to remove clothing before proceeding into a journey of typographic, infographic and awesomegraphic wonder. Really… there are moments of goose-bump inducing photographic and videographic fantasy in this show. In short: Sagmeister is chief in charge of all things “-graphic”.

SAGMEISTER WELCOME

SAGMEISTER’S WELCOME

The exhibition as a whole mimics a three-dimensional wander through Sagmeisters journals, from which much of the material is derived. Through meticulously designed infographics of yellow, black, and white statistics and data are presented on the topics of race, gender, race, money and how all these things affect and are affected by happiness. Some of them are interesting, some raw and perhaps alarming, some are common knowledge.

SAGMEISTER DIARY

SAGMEISTER DIARY

As expected, Sagmeister himself has meticulously combed over every square inch of the space, offering handwritten notes, jokes and love letters in the most adoring unexpected places (IE thought bubbles drawn around wall-mounted security cameras) – discovering them is like the adult version of finding the chocolates/eggs/whatever on Easter morning.

TALKING WALL STUFF

TALKING WALL STUFF

Additionally Sagmeister presents video pieces which combine typography with slowmotion photography and occasionally a dreamy soundtrack which address the subject matter in an esoteric way and quite simply bring forth the notion that existing is a crazy beautiful thing and that happiness IS tangible in our lives.

There’s little more than TWO WEEKS left to hit this exhibition before it wraps up and I *highly* suggest you do (ahem, it’s *free*) – I can guarantee you will leave feeling lighter, your day will be more colorful, and you will likely have a mouthful of free candy. Who doesn’t love free candy?
