Herakut “Masters of Wrong” at Corey Helford

This Saturday German artist duo HERAKUT will debut “Masters of Wrong” at Corey Helford Gallery’s new downtown LA space. 20+ paintings, as well as installations that include work created on site, will be on show in the space through April 20th.

Painter Hera (Jasmin Siddiqui) and graffiti artist Akut (Falk Lehman) have been painting murals all over the world since they started collaborating in 2004.  Their work has been shown in galleries in France, Germany, Gaza, UK, Jordan and the States; as well as on the streets of Frankfurt, Mexico City, Johannesburg, Sao Paulo, LA, San Francisco and Istanbul.

Herakut consider themselves storytellers.  Their paintings integrate text that challenges viewers with thoughts and direct questions about social issues, both personal and global.  The characters in their paintings and sculpture are fantastical beings – both human and animal … and sometimes both – that tell those stories in gesture just as much as the text does in words.

The new work in the “Masters of Wrong” collection introduces pop culture imagery that brings in things like Hello Kitty, Pikachu and… I think that’s Kim Kardashian in their piece titled “It Really Must Suck…”.  I appreciate the message, but can do without seeing Kim K. (anywhere, ever).  The rest is delicious, as is everything they do.
