18th Street Arts Center Presents Dual Reception
Amir H. Fallah | Perfect Strangers Alice Wang | solo exhibition

SANTA MONICA, CA – 18th Street Arts Center presents an exhibition reflecting explorations of identity, place, and physical phenomena through the transformation of collected objects and earth into artworks. Originally from Tehran, Iran, LA-based painter and installation artist Amir H. Fallah works with local communities and groups to collect material evidence of their public and private lives. Multidisciplinary artist Alice Wang, who was born in the ancient city of Xi’an and lives and works between LA and Toronto (Canada), uses elements of earth to reorient gravity from a scientific context toward an aesthetic one.

Amir H. Fallah | Perfect Strangers | Main Gallery
Perfect Strangers is an ongoing project where Amir H. Fallah explores identity, place, and the life of objects in cities around the world. During his Artist Lab Residency, Fallah will collaborate with young residents of Santa Monica to create site-specific portraits through painting, installation, photography, and sound. Exploring ideas of portrait/anti-portrait, Fallah offers a vision of community described through the deliberate arrangement of sentimental ephemera, collected from subjects known and unknown that embraces the nuances of the process by which we establish a sense of self.

In the Main Gallery, school children from area private and public schools will participate in Fallah’s project: creating group self-portraits focused on objects of significance to them and collaborating to produce a portrait of their own imaginings of their future selves. Additionally, Fallah will work with students from nearby Santa Monica College to create an installation environment inside which painted and recorded portraits of his collaborators will be installed.

Amir H. Fallah’s Artist Lab Residency at 18th Street Arts Center is generously supported by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Alice Wang | solo exhibition | Atrium Gallery
In her first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, Alice Wang presents sculptures, drawings, prints, and new video work. Using elements of the earth-including mineral oxides, chemical substances, precious metals, geological formations, and light-Wang sees her work as a method of invention and discovery of alternative temporalities.

Wang’s work explores quotidian physical phenomena, demonstrating that fossilized stone is subject to gravity in the same way as are dancers or tennis balls. Additionally, Wang presents web-based work hidden within the Center’s website: www.18thstreet.org.

Alice Wang’s exhibition at 18th Street Arts Center is generously supported by the University of California Institute for Research in the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
